Update on Cuts, etc..

Hello everyone,

I know there have been many questions about what cuts we will be taking in Zauberflote.  We will not be cutting any music as learning the entire score for your future work is an important part of this training program.  Learn all music and acquaint yourselves with the entire opera, NOT JUST THE SECTIONS YOU SING! :)

As for the dialogue, most of it will be cut!  The dialogue will be replaced by a narrator who will fill in the story for the audience in a very creative way.  Other creative options are being thought of too.  Mr. Marvel is a brilliant and creative artist and so we are all in good hands with him leading this part of the program.  So, for now, just concern yourself mostly with the music.

EVERYONE MUST LEARN ALL THE CHORUS MUSIC AS WELL!  Yes, this is true.  We may make some decisions about who will and won't sing choral parts, but everyone will learn all of the choral music and participate in rehearsals of the chorus music.  This too is a very important part of the learning process, and it is important to support the scenes of your colleagues by helping with chorus parts.  We will not have any prima donnas (or prima uomos for that matter) in this program.  Everyone will support each other and participate in all aspects of the program, including helping with the chorus as needed.  It is not a lot of extra music for anyone, and as musicians and performers it is important that you know ALL the music of this opera, not just your own parts.  So, please look at the chorus parts in addition to your own roles.

For those concerned about recent news regarding North Korea:  We certainly understand and appreciate your concerns regarding the safety and stability at a time when we hear very aggressive talk from the North.  The administration in Seoul wishes to reassure everyone that while such things may make the news, there is no reason to feel unsafe at this time.  The unfortunate circumstances are that North Korea often engages in such behaviour whenever they wish to gain something politically from other countries, or whenever they need to demonstrate their authority to the people residing in North Korea.  As musicians, we are fortunate to be able to come together in a program such as the Seoul International Opera Program to make great music, learn from each other and establish friendships that have nothing to do with borders or politics.  Rest assured that the wonderful city and people of Seoul are at ease, as always, during these times and are ready to welcome all participants for a great and wonderful summer of opera.
