Information for Pianists

Pianists are expected to be able to play the entire score of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte before the beginning of the course on July 13th.  You will be involved in the program as pianists for rehearsals and coachings of singers which will begin immediately from the start of the program.  Please be sure you are well acquainted with the story, the characters and the music and able to play all of the score at a proficient and competent level before the start of the program.  For anyone who does not have a lot of experience preparing an entire opera, the following includes a suggestion as to how to efficiently prepare.

Recommended process for learning this score:

Materials needed:

  • Piano/Vocal score (Bärenreiter edition is preferred)
  • Full Score
  • CD Recording
  • Libretto which includes both the original German text and a good (preferably literal) translation of the text.  (Many CD recordings include a complete libretto with good translation).

1)    Read through the entire libretto first to acquaint yourself with the story and the characters.

2)    Beginning with #1, read through the translation of the text for this number.

3)    Speak, out loud, the German text for this number

4)    Listen to a recording of this number

5)    Work through orchestra/piano part  at the piano, learning all notes, rhythms, fingerings, etc.

6)    Play through the vocal part(s), singing along, making sure to learn the German text as you go.

7)    Listen to the recording once again, this time following along with the orchestra score.  Pay particular attention to the sound of the orchestra, noticing as much detail as you can about the sounds of different instruments, etc..

8)    Play through the number again at the piano, trying to imitate the sound of the orchestra as much as possible while also trying to sing/”hear” the vocal part as you play.

9)    Listen to the recording once more while again following along with the full score.
